Fillings are most commonly used to treat cavities. As their name suggests, fillings fill in any cavities (holes) left behind from tooth decay. Dental fillings can also come in handy for cosmetic purposes such as repairing cracked, chipped, or worn-down teeth.
Before we begin, we pick out a filling shade that matches the color of your teeth. Then, we thoroughly numb the area so the most you’ll feel is slight pressure while we work. Once the area is numb, we remove the decay and clean your tooth. After, we’ll apply the filling to the damaged area of the tooth and cure it with a blue light. When your filling is in place, Dr. Chittajallu will ask you to bite down to make sure it feels comfortable and doesn’t affect the way your upper and lower teeth fit together.
Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
Tooth fillings can be made from a variety of different materials such as amalgam (silver fillings) and composite resin (tooth-colored fillings). However, these days, most people choose composite resin fillings because they offer a wide range of benefits:
- We don’t have to remove as much tooth structure to place them.
- Unlike silver fillings, they are repairable so if there’s an issue with a small area of the filling, we can fix that part without replacing the entire filling.
- The tooth-colored material will blend in perfectly with your other teeth compared to noticeable silver fillings.
